01/25/2007 - East Rutherford, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former U.S. National Team captain Claudio Reyna returned home on Wednesday as the New York Red Bulls announced the signing of the midfielder just one day after his contract was terminated by his former club, Manchester City.
The 33-year-old Reyna will be reunited with Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena after the club used the designated player rule to obtain him. Reyna has had great success with Arena, enjoying his best years as a player on the international level with the coach. The Springfield, New Jersey native also played under Arena during his collegiate career at the University of Virginia before furthering his career in Europe.
"I am pleased that Claudio has agreed to sign with our club," said Arena, the Red Bulls sporting director and head coach. "Claudio is a proven player at the highest levels in the game and his experience and leadership skills will improve our team. I'm excited to have him as a member of the Red Bulls."
Reyna started off in Germany where he played for Wolfsburg and Bayer Levekusen before moving on to Scottish power Rangers and then to Sunderland. He has spent the past three-plus seasons with Manchester City, where he made 77 appearances and scored four goals while providing solid two-way play in the middle of the field.
"I'm very excited to be coming back to play at home minutes from where I grew up," said Reyna. "I look forward to playing for Bruce, who I have known for such a long time, and am excited about the whole opportunity to join a club that is looking to do a lot of good things in the future."
The gritty Reyna is best known for his performance in the 2002 World Cup, where the United States advanced all the way to the quarterfinals. Reyna earned a spot on the FIFA World Cup All-Star First Team for his spectacular play. He is the only U.S. player ever to have achieved that honor.
He has made 112 appearances for the United States in international competition, scoring eight goals and taking part in three World Cups. He retired from international competition after the 2006 tournament.
