Godolphin three-year-olds shine in returns

09/21/2009 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The week just ended featured a pair of three-year-old colts making successful returns to the races. Midshipman and Regal Ransom, both owned by Godolphin Racing, posted victories after significant time off.

Midshipman, 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile champ, made his first start of the year on Thursday at Belmont Park. The 2008 champion two-year-old colt pressured the pacesetter in a 6 1/2 fulrong race before taking the lead in early stretch and winning by better than three-lengths.

"That's a pretty good horse (Just Ben) he stalked all the way around," said Rick Mettee, assistant to Godolphin head trainer Saeed bin Suroor. "Fifteen and change, off a layoff, is a pretty good time. Obviously he handled the dirt pretty well. The staff did a great job in getting him ready. This gives us a lot more options. We'll just digest all this. There's no definitive race. We'll see."

Last year Midshipman was trained by Bob Baffert when Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stable was the listed owner. The colt was transfered to Godolphin after the Breeders' Cup Juvenile victory.

Midshipman was sidelined with a minor soft tissue injury to his left front leg. The injury came during a workout in late February in Dubai.

Regal Ransom led the entire way on Saturday in giving Godolphin a second win in the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs. This was the colt's first start since finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 2.

"It was good to see Regal Ransom win the race well and it validates his UAE Derby victory," Rick Mettee noted. "He is a grand horse who always tries hard. He trains well, like a good horse, and while we didn't expect him to win so easily, we were looking for a good run."

The winning jockey in both races was veteran reinsman Richard Migliore.

"I was very happy in the race," Migliore said about the Super Derby. "My horse travelled so well, comfortably and relaxed. I really felt like a winner into the first turn, I had a lot of horse."

There are no plans at the moment for Regal Ransom. The colt has won three of seven lifetime starts for $1,750,000.

Godolphins first Super Derby victory came in 2002 with Essence Of Dubai.

Meanwhile, Migliore will be riding in California in advance of the Breeders' Cup to be held at Santa Anita Park on November 6 and 7.

"I'm going back (to California) on October 6 and I'll ride the remainder of the meet at Oak Tree until the day after the Breeders' Cup and then come back to New York," Migliore said. "I'll be riding and working with Godolphin and I've also got business with David Hofmans, Bill Spawr, people I (already) have relationships with. I thought that to give myself the best chance to have a decent Breeders' Cup weekend, being there, being able to work horses that are prepping for it, being at the place it's running gives myself the biggest opportunity to get on those type of horses."

Migliore won the 2008 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint aboard 36-1 longshot Desert Code, owned by Tarabilla Farms and trained by Hofmans. This summer at Saratoga Miglioire rode Godolphin's Flashing to victory in the $300,000 Test Stakes,

MySportsbook.com week 1 NFL lines

Now that the 2008 NFL schedule is finally out, it is only matter-of-course for lines on “Week 1” to follow.  Of course MySportsbook.com is the first to churn out odds for the NFL’s inaugural week for the upcoming season.   Expect a lot of fireworks the first Thursday night of the season as the defending champion Indianapolis Colts face off against the surprise of the 2008 season, the New Orleans Saints.  These teams were ranked #1 and #3 in the NFL respectively a season ago so a high scoring affair could be in order.  As of now, the Colts will be giving 6 points to the Saints; keep in mind the Saints were one of the better road teams last season going 6-3 SU and 7-2 ATS.  The first Monday night of the season will again provide a “double feature”. Coming off a disappointing season, the Cincinnati Bengals will look to get back to playoffs and improve their public image as they take on the AFC North favorite Baltimore Ravens.  The second game features a couple of teams that haven’t had too much success recently but each could make some noise if the NFC is as weak as it was last year as the San Francisco 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals. The most interesting game of the opening week will feature the NFC champion Bears as they hit the road to take on the NFL’s top team during last year’s regular season, the San Diego Chargers.
